“I see some of these rugs as ‘seasons,’ and others as if you are looking from above onto a forest, through exotic forms from the ocean or snowflakes on the ground...” The Bas Reliefs rug collection is defined by concentric geometry and a three-dimensional design approach. While the work maintains a strong linear graphic, the lines that compose the rugs rise from the field to create a sculpted floor covering. The rugs are designed in a cellular fashion, which allows for a wide range of customization. All patterns from the collection can be produced in a range of custom sizes and colorways in both hand-tufted and hand-knotted construction.
The rugs reflect my interest in expressing the connection between two-dimensional line drawings and three-dimensional forms. The period of early twentieth century design and in particular, the decorative work of American architect Louis Sullivan also informs this collection. Sullivan used bas reliefs in bronze, plaster and terra cotta to define his architecture through a play of light and shadow. In contrast to the flush, clean articulation of contemporary design, “Bas Reliefs speaks to early American Modernism as well as the complexity of nature’s forms, an enduring subject of my work.”
