David Nosanchuk
b. 1969
David Nosanchuk is an inspired American artist based in New York City. His early studies at the Cranbrook Academy, Michigan’s historic arts community, embedded the methodology that continues to inform his approach to thinking and making. Within all of Nosanchuk’s work is a combination of rigour, history, technology and storytelling. Exploring existing works of design and nature, he questions what is an original and what is a copy, creating contemporary narratives with new materials and fabrication techniques. In 1991, Nosanchuk earned a degree in Art History at University of Michigan, followed by a Masters of Architecture at Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in 1996. During his time in Los Angeles, he became a master woodworker, creating commissioned works and teaching furniture making. In 2000, Nosanchuk launched his first furniture and lighting collection at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) where his N1 Table Lamp was named “Best in Show”. In 2012, a custom iteration of this lamp was permanently installed on the Cranbrook campus, where Nosanchuk has been commissioned to design more unique decorative elements. Exploring his photography, Nosanchuk collaborated with Flavor Paper to produce “Super Series” a digitally printed wallpaper collection based on his photos of Rome and New York, now part of the permanent collections of the Cooper Hewitt and Lés Arts Décoratifs, Paris. Nosanchuk’s “Louie”, a light derived from a 3D scan of a Louis Sullivan building has been exhibited internationally and was commissioned in a series for the Italian Olympic Pavilion in Rio de Janeiro. “Butterfly Asteroid”, Nosanchuk’s most recent work, was commissioned by Glenn Adamson in 2016 for the “Wood, Revisited” exhibition at the Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia. Soon after, this series launched with Rosanna Orlandi at PAD London and in Milan and has since been exhibited at Design Miami, Salon, Fog and Tefaf as well as a recent show at the List Gallery. Nosanchuk also works with international brands, creating designs for Alessi, Boyd, Ex Novo and Stark. He is currently working on new commissions with international museums and galleries, as well as architects, designers and private clients.
